Shopify's latest Editions is really about one thing: getting your product data ready for AI

Every Editions drop lands with a wall of updates, and the Spring ‘26 update is no different with more than 150 updates and changes across the platform. Most of them are incremental back-end improvements that quietly make the platform better. But if you strip it back, two or three things actually matter for the brands I work with.

Catalog is the headline

The change I would put at number one is Shopify Catalog. In plain terms, it is a universal product catalog that lets any AI or large language model read your product data, understand it, and surface it wherever you want it served. That sounds technical, but the practical point is simple. Agentic commerce only works if the machine can read your products cleanly.

Here’s where most brands come unstuck. We do a lot of migrations onto Shopify, and the amount of messy product data we see is remarkable. You get a brand with t-shirts that are effectively the same colour across multiple seasons, all labelled slightly differently, with sizes that are not uniform. That has been totally fine until now. It stops being fine the moment an LLM is the thing deciding whether to surface your product.

So the job for merchants right now is data hygiene. Get everything labelled consistently, get your sizes uniform, and make it as easy as possible for future agentic commerce to happen against your catalogue. Shopify makes that genuinely easy to do, which is more than I can say for anyone else. We work with brands on Magento, WooCommerce and Salesforce Commerce Cloud, and none of those platforms are thinking like this. That is the part worth sitting with: the quicker you get on it, the more green space there is.

It’s worth acting early

I’ll be honest. I’ve never bought anything through an AI agent, and I am not convinced most people are, yet. But that’s not the point, and it’s where a lot of brands talk themselves out of doing anything.

Join European founders, operators, and investors who read The Checkout every week.

Think about it the way you would think about SEO. Making your data easy for the machine to read simply makes it more likely the machine will surface it. Nobody has to buy through an agent for this to pay off. If your product gets surfaced, the customer learns it exists, and they may well come to your site and buy later. If your data is in a state where the LLMs won’t surface you at all, you have already lost, because your competitors will do the work. They might not win the sale in the chat window, but they are getting the eyeballs and you’re not.

I can see this in our own numbers. At SuperCo we monitor every inbound enquiry, and well over half now come from LLMs. Think about how many searches for "best walking boots" or "best frying pan" are running through a chat interface these days. I use Gemini myself for that kind of shopping research and this is exactly where the Catalog bleeds into SEO and GEO: it is about showing up in the new AI-mediated order, and Shopify has handed merchants a real advantage in doing that.

Sidekick has quietly become useful

The other AI story is Sidekick. Sidekick now feels embedded in the platform rather than bolted on. It can reach across your reviews platform, your email tool and your subscription app and pull all of it into useful reports. Because Shopify has a unified layer sitting under all these apps, you are not clicking into siloed third parties trying to work out where each one hides its analytics. You just ask.

If you want Sidekick to build the store or lay out sections, it is still fairly basic. But for surfacing information, especially across third parties, it is a real time-saver. Shopify is ahead here, and not just of other commerce platforms. They are ahead of most SaaS platforms in actually shipping a useful AI experience, and a lot of our clients are leaning on it for reporting.

B2B on more plans

The other change worth flagging for anyone building at scale is B2B on every plan. Access to B2B used to be a reason on its own to sit on Shopify Plus. Now more brands can get company profiles, volume pricing and multiple B2B catalogs without paying up for it.

If you are thinking about wholesale, the offering itself has matured a long way. Three years ago it was rudimentary. Today it replaces the spreadsheet-and-manual-ERP process that still runs a shocking amount of trade ordering, with all the room for error that implies. You pull in your existing SKUs, set minimum order quantities, and apply volume-based discounts and pricing per company, or even per branch within a company. For most merchants adding a wholesale arm it has everything you need.

If you only do one thing…

Every brand I talk to is asking about agentic commerce. Is it going to be 20 percent of your revenue next year? Almost certainly not. But a product catalogue built to be read by LLMs is only going to improve your visibility, and that is not a bet that can really go wrong. Get your data in order now, while the space is still open.
