Shopify AI Search

Shopify's new analysis of merchant traffic across its platform highlights how agentic commerce is performing in practice.

The data covers Q1 2026 and isolates referrals from AI chatbots including ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google Gemini, Microsoft Copilot, Claude and Grok.

The conversion gap

According to Shopify, sessions originating from AI platforms outperform organic search on three core commercial metrics:

  • AI-referred sessions convert at nearly 50% higher rates than organic when isolated to traffic landing on product detail pages.
  • Average order values from AI-referred sessions are 14% higher than from organic search.
  • More than half of AI-referred sessions start on a product page, compared to roughly 20% for organic.

On product-page sessions, AI-referred traffic converted better than organic in 23 of the 25 merchant categories Shopify tracked. Across those 23 categories, the average conversion uplift over organic was 56%.

Volume is small but accelerating

AI-referred orders on Shopify grew nearly 13x year-on-year in Q1 2026, and AI chatbot referral sessions grew more than 8x over the same period. The base remains small: organic search still drives more sessions to Shopify merchants than all tracked AI platforms combined, and same-store organic sessions are up around 5%.

Shopify also notes the true share of AI-mediated commerce is likely understated. Google AI Overviews — the most widely used AI search surface — sends referrals that are classified as organic in standard analytics rather than as AI.

Journey compression

Shopify attributes the conversion lift to what it calls "journey compression." AI platforms typically recommend specific products rather than brands or categories, so shoppers click through having already completed the research phase inside the chat interface.
